Adult Male Richmond's Wrasse

The Richmond's Wrasse (Halichoeres richmondi) is a hardy, pest-eating reef fish needing a well-established tank (70+ gallons) with 2-3+ inches of fine sand for burrowing at night or when startled, and a tight-fitting lid to prevent jumping. Feed meaty foods (mysis, brine shrimp) multiple times daily, plus flakes/pellets, but be aware they'll eat small crustaceans, feather dusters, and flatworms. They're great pest controllers but may be too aggressive for tiny shrimp/snails, preferring peaceful tankmates.

Tank & Environment

Size: Minimum 70 gallons, with plenty of swimming room and rockwork for foraging.

Substrate: A deep (2-3+ inch) fine sand bed is crucial for burrowing.

Lid:

Essential, as they are jumpers.

Compatibility:

Generally peaceful, but may eat small ornamental shrimp, crabs, and fan worms; good tankmates are other peaceful wrasses.

Diet & Feeding

Frequency:

Feed 3-4 times daily to keep them busy and reduce aggression towards cleanup crews.

Foods:

Varied diet of vitamin-enriched frozen mysis/brine shrimp, high-quality flakes/pellets, and even live copepods.

Pest Control:

Excellent for eating fireworms, pyramid snails, flatworms, and parasites off tankmates.

Key Considerations

Pest Eater:

Will hunt and consume small invertebrates, including microfauna like copepods and amphipods.

Hermaphroditic:

Can change sex, so adding a male with females simultaneously helps prevent aggression.
Hardiness:

Well-adapted to aquarium life but needs appropriate setup.
